Trans People and Work in Scotland
New research highlights work barriers for trans people in Scotland
Trans people in Scotland face specific barriers when seeking and staying in work. We aimed to understand these barriers in a Scottish context and how to address them. To do this, we ran two in-depth focus groups, which informed the development of an online anonymous survey. The survey asked participants about their current employment situation and their experiences with finding and holding jobs. Our goal was to capture both barriers and enablers, as well as positive experiences, alongside areas needing improvement.
Key findings on barriers faced by trans people
The report provides valuable data on the employment situation of trans people in pre-COVID Scotland. It explores experiences of coming out, transitioning, and whether people have faced discrimination or harassment. It also looks at the role of supportive networks, rights, and protections. The report highlights key areas for change and presents recommendations put forward by trans people.
Positive and negative experiences
The findings reveal a range of experiences, from positive ones to examples of good practice. However, many trans people face disadvantages due to their identity. Some report their trans identity negatively impacts job prospects, while others find workplaces are not trans-inclusive. Some also face harassment or unfair treatment, affecting their mental health.
The need for workplace change
Less than half of respondents felt their workplace was trans-inclusive. Fewer than a quarter felt workplace policies ensured equality for trans people. More than half experienced harassment related to their trans identity, including misgendering, transphobic comments, verbal abuse, and discrimination. Most didn’t report it to HR or a manager, as they felt ill-equipped to handle such issues.
Awareness of rights and employer action
While trans people are aware of their rights, they are less confident their employers are. The findings suggest a need for better policies, education, guidance, and visibility of trans people in the workplace.
We hope these findings inspire change and promote greater equality.
