A Manual For Me: a Suicide Prevention Toolkit
Many LGBTQ+ individuals face mental health challenges, which inspired us to create this LGBT+ suicide prevention toolkit. It aims to provide support during tough times when coping feels difficult.
Understanding mental health and suicide risks in the LGBTQ+ community
Mental health struggles and suicide are often hard to talk about, but suicidal thoughts are more common than we might think. Around 1 in 5 people experience these thoughts. For some, they come and go, while for others, they can feel constant.
LGBTQ+ people face a much higher risk of suicide and self-harm. Our recent Edinburgh community survey found that 60% of respondents experienced suicidal thoughts, up from 49% in the previous survey. Additionally, 57% said self-harm was an issue, an increase from 53%. The 2023 Life in Scotland Health Report by LGBT Youth Scotland showed that 50% of respondents had experienced suicidal thoughts or actions.
Challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people
Being part of the LGBTQ+ community can bring extra challenges that make life feel overwhelming. Issues such as shame or difficulty asking for help due to complex family relationships or struggles with healthcare professionals can add to the stress.
What the toolkit offers
Developed with LGBTQ+ individuals, this toolkit provides practical tips and exercises to help plan for tough times, especially when suicidal thoughts may arise. It encourages people to create a personal ‘manual for me’—a plan based on their habits and preferences to stay safe and well.
Using the toolkit
The toolkit is meant for everyday use, not crisis situations. It helps individuals choose strategies that work for them and encourages self-reflection on emotional and physical well-being to maintain mental balance.
