How Scotland can help LGBTQ+ people seeking asylum integrate

On 1 February 2024, LGBT Health and Wellbeing and the Scottish Refugee Council hosted a consultation with LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Scotland, part of the LGBT+ Refugee Project. Around 60 people shared their experiences and ideas about life in Scotland. The event focused on the Scottish Government’s New Scots Integration Strategy, published in March 2024. It gave LGBTQ+ asylum seekers a platform to express what they need to feel included and live well in Scotland.

Challenges LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Scotland face

LGBTQ+ asylum seekers face several challenges. A major issue raised was a lack of support on arrival. Many struggle to access essential services like housing, healthcare, and legal assistance. There is a need for more LGBTQ+ inclusive services to help them navigate these systems. Legal advice is another concern, as many asylum seekers find it hard to access lawyers who understand their unique challenges, such as discrimination or inadequate representation.

Healthcare is another key issue. LGBTQ+ asylum seekers find it difficult to access services, particularly mental health support. Many participants called for healthcare services that are more sensitive and responsive to their needs. Education also came up, with participants calling for schools and English language classes that are welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQ+ refugees.

Improving integration and support

Cultural integration is crucial. Participants called for more safe spaces where people from different backgrounds can meet and connect. This would help break down barriers and promote inclusion. Access to affordable and reliable transport was also highlighted as an issue. Many asylum seekers struggle to reach essential services and social events due to poor transport options.

Key recommendations for improvement

Several key recommendations emerged from the consultation. Service providers should better understand the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. The New Scots Welcome Pack should include information on LGBTQ+ services. More work and volunteering opportunities should be available, and free, LGBTQ+ affirming spaces for sport and leisure should be created. Extending free bus travel to asylum seekers would help reduce financial strain and improve access to services.
