Volunteers Week: meet Robin

It’s Volunteers Week, and we’re celebrating the incredible contributions of our volunteers to Scotland’s LGBTQ+ community. Meet Robin (he/they), a Trustee with LGBT Health and Wellbeing. Robin helps guide the organisation’s strategic decisions, ensuring it delivers effective services and support to the LGBTQ+ community in Scotland. Their goal is to empower volunteers and staff while creating a welcoming environment for all.
A portrait of Robin who volunteers on our Board as a Trustee

My name is Robin (he/they)

I’m a Trustee at LGBT Health and Wellbeing. I also work as the Student Voice Manager at Edinburgh University Students’ Association, where I help students create positive change on issues that matter to them—at the University of Edinburgh, in the city, and beyond. Outside of work, I enjoy powerlifting, creating zines from my poetry, and telling my cat she’s the love of my life.

What led you to become a volunteer at LGBT Health and Wellbeing?

During my time as a student, I participated in LGBT Health and Wellbeing’s community groups. In 2019, I accessed their counselling service, which changed my life. When I saw the charity was recruiting Trustees, I saw a great chance to apply my skills and contribute to providing oversight of LGBT Health and Wellbeing’s services.

What is your role as a volunteer?

As a Trustee, I work with the Board on the strategic management and governance of the organisation. We ensure the organisation stays focused on its charitable objectives and operates effectively to provide the best support for the LGBT community in Scotland. We meet regularly to discuss updates from staff and make important decisions, such as reviewing policies and approving budgets.

What are you most proud of as a Trustee?

I’m proud that we deliver great services that meet our users’ needs, but also that we support our volunteers and staff. I joined the Board’s People Subcommittee to help improve how we support staff and empower volunteers to join the team when opportunities arise.

If you could change something for the community, what would it be?

Personally, I’ve faced real challenges accessing trans healthcare, including having to travel abroad for surgery because it was not affordable or accessible in the UK. I hope to see changes that would allow trans people to focus on other aspects of life without facing such barriers.

Who inspires you?

I’m constantly inspired by the young people I work with. They are insightful, joyful, caring, and unafraid to challenge institutions when they believe change is needed.
